Forklift Battery Safety
The power to operate electric lift trucks is provided by large industrial batteries which need to be charged frequently and maintained properly. Safety procedures should be followed while someone connects the battery to the charger. It is important to inspect battery fluid levels.
Personal Protective Equipment - PPE
It is vital for employees working with a lift truck battery to wear eye protection. Other PPG consist of goggles, safety glasses, or a full face shield. The right way to protect both clothes and skin from leaked acid or other residue is to wear an approved apron on the body and thick rubber gloves on the hands.
Emergency Eyewash Station
Next to the charging place should be an emergency eyewash station. The path to the post must not be obstructed and an employee who is injured must be able to go to the eyewash station from the charging area within 10 seconds without running.
Charger Safety
The charger should be the same amperage as the battery. It must be turned off while the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
When near a charging area and battery, open flames are prohibited. Never allow objects like for example lighters or matches to be utilized when someone is checking the fluid levels in the battery.
Ventilation
The battery charging place also needs to be correctly ventilated. The recharging process could cause fumes to be released. These fumes are both explosive and toxic.
