It is a lot more complex to drive a lift truck than to drive a car. The lift truck operator needs to have the necessary skills and receive special training to utilize a lift truck. A high level of attentiveness is required to drive a lift truck. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration or also known as OSHA reports that 85 people die in forklift-related accidents per year. About 35,000 people are injured every year in mishaps related to lift trucks. Almost half of operator deaths are caused by a lift truck tip over.

Drivers have to be able to accurately estimate load weights to prevent the equipment from tipping over. The weight of the load in construction settings will usually be posted on the load. If the load consists of cubes containing 90 concrete blocks and a concrete block weighs 16 kilograms, the total weight of the load will be roughly 1,360 kilograms. When a load is wet, the operator will need to take more weight into account.

It could be dangerous if the driver makes poorly informed guesses as the loads actual weight and whether the equipment can handle the load. If a driver cannot be certain about the load weight, he must request help from the supervisor.

Failure to pull up close enough to a building or raise a load using an extended boom could be one more cause of tip overs. In order to prevent tipping lift truck, it is essential to utilize the load chart. Even if a forklift does not actually tip over, a mishap has happened whenever the back wheels come off the ground. This means the forklift limitations have been exceeded. Although damage might not be obvious, the back axle could have sustained broken when hitting the ground.

It is also possible for forklifts to tip even when not carrying a load. Unloaded lift trucks can tip just after a driver has placed a load on scaffolding using an extended boom. If the driver reverses the forklift and suddenly turns whilst bringing the boom down, the center of gravity will be pushed to the edges of the forklift and can lead to a tip over. An operator must always utilize the joysticks to lower and retract the fork.
