Before purchasing a forklift truck, you must make sure that it is well inspected and given a test run. This applies especially to trucks being bought online. It is important to find potential problems with trucks obtained from companies online.
Starting the engine from cold is a great idea. Note whether there is too much smoke and the ease with which the engine turns over. This is specifically crucial with IC engine trucks.
The test run should include a check of the truck's performance in challenging situations. An operator who is trained could drive the truck in reverse and forward, up the ramp.
You could inspect an IC engine truck yourself. On a clear part of floor, run the truck around for a few minutes while a skilled driver tests the hydraulic functions. After that, examine the ground underneath for signs of fluid leakage. Even seemingly minor leaking can lead to serious problems which would be really pricey to fix later on.
The chains and masts should be checked by a trained person. Check with and without a load that the mast operates smoothly. Watch for 'binding' or sticking of the mast. A warning indication is play in the mast channels or between the mast and fork carriage. Another is creeping forward or creeping down of the mast when loaded. These could be signs of problems with seals, ram or valve.
The mast might have been changed at some time if the truck is not new. Make certain that the mast and any fitted attachments follow the rating plate on a truck. Make sure that the sideshift is not sticking when loaded.
When inspecting the forks, look closely at the heel thickness for damage or wear. The manufacturer of the truck specifies minimum thickness. A loose fit might mean the hanger points or carriage are worn. Watch for cracks on the arms at mountings and heels.
