Fuel Storage
In order to be secure, the smaller fuel canisters or the big refueling tank needs to be stored away from the main building or complex. Adding to the safety aspect, it is required that "No Smoking" signs are prominently displayed in the vicinity. Ideally, the fuel tanks should be stored in a safe enclosure which can only be accessed by authorized employees. It is vital for the operator's safety, and everyone they work with, that these safety measures are strictly complied with.
The fuel enclosure itself needs to be protected from vehicle impact. Using retaining systems such as concrete bumpers for instance, could carry out this job. Other retaining methods could be used. It is also necessary to have a fire extinguisher nearby at the refueling station. Moreover, anyone who is operating the fueling station is required to be trained and also must be trained to operate the fire extinguisher effectively and safely. When it comes to the fuel aspect, safety is of utmost importance.
Operator Training
The OSHA or the Occupational Safety and Health Administration require that everybody who is using an industrial powered forklift or lift truck is trained properly. This training includes both the hands-on training and the classroom portion. As soon as finishing the training session, the individual needs to be tested to be able to show that they understand the training materials. A portion of this training also covers the proper way of the refueling process of the forklift. The training also involves site-specific procedures as well as the precautions involved for the refueling of any unit they might be driving.
Medical Treatment
Material Safety Data Sheet or MSDS must be situated in all facilities where lift trucks are operating. This center will include the MSDSs for all solvents and chemicals which are used on site. This will also cover the propane which is utilized to refuel the unit, along with the acid in the lift truck battery.
MSDSs sheets need to be available for all employees at all times. If any exposure incident happens for instance, the individual has to be evaluated at once. If any medical attention is considered necessary, to must be given without any delay. Generally, if you are uncertain if medical treatment is required, as a general rule; have the injury examined by a medical professional if you fear it is severe. Always better to be safe than sorry.
