Rough Terrain Forklift Safety
The rough terrain forklift is meant for construction sites, where materials have to be moved around on unpaved surfaces. The safe and proper use of rough terrain forklifts is essential in order to guarantee the safety of both the driver and other workers at the work site.
Terrain
Even if these trucks are made for rough terrain, you still should be very careful in order avoid tip overs. The forklift is top heavy and must just be operated on level ground when lifting.
Speed
Even though there are no Occupational Safety and Health Administration regulations governing forklift speed limitations, forklift drivers should drive at a safe speed every time. Driving on terrain that is uneven or rough needs even more caution. Steering, particularly, could be very unsafe at faster speeds.
Incline
Keep the load on the uphill side of the machine when operating on an incline. The rule of thumb is drive up, and then back down. Never attempt to raise a load when operating on an inclined surface. The change in the center of gravity can cause the machinery to tip over.
Safety Devices
Like any driver, forklift operators are obliged to put on seat belts. Check that the overhead guard is firmly in position. Depending on the working environment, hearing and eye protection might need to be worn. Check that a working fire extinguisher is mounted on the forklift.
Weather
The operating conditions of a forklift could be affected by weather. Load handling, speed and turning may need to be adjusted to guarantee safety when operating a forklift in snow, ice or rain.
